Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Sour cream or vinegar, for serving
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
- Make a well in the center and add 2 eggs and 1/2 cup of water. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, then cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together 1 pound of ground beef, 1 small finely chopped onion, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. Use a round cutter to cut out circles of dough.
- Place a small spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges to seal, creating a half-moon shape.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pelmeni and cook for about 8-10 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Remove the pelmeni with a slotted spoon and serve with sour cream or vinegar. Enjoy!
Pelmeni, a traditional Russian dish, has a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Originating from the Ural region, these savory dumplings were initially created as a convenient and hearty meal for travelers and hunters. The word "pelmeni" is said to have been derived from the Finno-Ugric word for "ear bread," due to their ear-like shape. Today, pelmeni are enjoyed throughout Russia and beyond, with variations in fillings and cooking methods. Some renowned chefs and restaurants in Russia, such as Cafe Pushkin in Moscow, are known for their exceptional pelmeni. The key to perfect pelmeni lies in the delicate balance of the filling, typically a mix of ground meat, onions, and spices, and the thinness of the dough. For an alternative method, some prefer to make Siberian pelmeni, which are larger in size and often filled with a mix of meats like pork, beef, and lamb. For the best pelmeni experience, seek out authentic Russian eateries or try making them at home with care and attention to detail.
