Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Add 1/2 cup melted butter, warm milk, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes, adding the remaining 1/2 cup of flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into small pieces, about the size of a walnut. Dip each piece into the 1/2 cup of melted butter, then roll in the brown sugar mixture.
- Place the coated dough pieces into a greased bundt pan, layering them as you go. Cover the pan with a kitchen towel and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the monkey bread for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Allow the monkey bread to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then invert it onto a serving plate. Serve warm and enjoy!
Monkey Bread, a sweet, sticky, and indulgent treat, has a history rooted in American home baking. Its origins can be traced back to the 1950s, with its popularity soaring in the 1970s. This pull-apart bread is made from bite-sized pieces of dough coated in cinnamon, sugar, and butter, then baked to golden perfection. The dish's name is said to come from the act of pulling apart the bread with one's fingers, resembling the way monkeys eat. While its exact origins are unclear, Monkey Bread has become a beloved dish in the Midwest and Southern regions of the United States. Today, it's a staple at family gatherings, potlucks, and holiday celebrations. Chefs and home bakers alike have put their own spin on this classic, adding nuts, raisins, or even a cream cheese filling.
