  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/2 cup bread crumbs, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix until well combined, then shape into meatballs.
  • Place the meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through.

  • Slice the hoagie rolls in half and place 3-4 meatballs in each roll. Spoon some marinara sauce over the meatballs and sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese. Place the subs on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve the meatball subs with the crispy garlic parmesan fries and enjoy!

The history of meatball subs sides can be traced back to the early 20th century in the United States. This classic Italian-American dish gained popularity in the Northeast, particularly in cities like New York and Philadelphia, where Italian immigrants settled and brought their culinary traditions. The meatball sub is a hearty sandwich featuring savory meatballs smothered in marinara sauce and topped with melted cheese, all nestled in a soft, crusty Italian roll. It's often served with a side of crispy fries, onion rings, or a fresh green salad. Some renowned chefs and restaurants have put their own spin on this beloved dish, adding unique ingredients or homemade sauces to elevate the flavors. Today, the best meatball subs can be found in authentic Italian delis and eateries that prioritize using high-quality, seasoned meat for the perfect meatball, and freshly baked bread to hold it all together. The key to a delicious meatball sub lies in the balance of flavors and textures, from the tender meatballs to the tangy marinara and gooey cheese. While the classic version remains a favorite, some alternative methods include using different types of meat for the meatballs, such as a blend of beef, pork, and veal, or adding a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese for an extra savory kick. Whether enjoyed as a quick lunch or a satisfying dinner, meatball subs sides are a comforting and indulgent treat for any food lover.
