German

Kraut burgers, also known as runza or bierock, have a rich history rooted in German and Eastern European culinary traditions. This savory dish consists of seasoned ground beef, onions, and sauerkraut encased in a yeasted dough and baked to golden perfection. Originating in the Volga German community, it made its way to the United States, particularly Nebraska, where it became a beloved regional specialty. Today, the best kraut burgers can be found in Nebraska, particularly at the iconic Runza restaurant chain. The key to a perfect kraut burger lies in the balance of flavors between the hearty filling and the soft, pillowy dough.
