Korean BBQ beef, also known as bulgogi, has a rich history dating back to the Goguryeo era in Korea. This marinated, thinly sliced beef dish was traditionally prepared by marinating the meat in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and pear puree to tenderize the meat. The dish gained popularity in the 20th century and is now a staple in Korean cuisine. Today, it is commonly grilled over charcoal or on a gas griddle, and served with a variety of side dishes such as kimchi, lettuce, and ssamjang. Some renowned restaurants in Seoul, such as Mapo Jeong Daepo, are known for their exceptional bulgogi. The key to a perfect bulgogi lies in the quality of the beef and the balance of flavors in the marinade. For a unique twist, some chefs use alternative methods such as sous vide cooking to achieve the perfect tenderness. Whether enjoyed in a bustling restaurant in Seoul or homemade with a traditional family recipe, Korean BBQ beef continues to be a beloved dish worldwide.
