The hot dog, a seasoned sausage in a bun, became a popular street food in cities like New York and Chicago. The addition of onions, whether raw, grilled, or caramelized, adds a flavorful and aromatic element to this classic dish. Some renowned chefs and restaurants have put their own spin on the hot dog with onions, such as Chicago's famous "Depression Dog" topped with caramelized onions at Gene & Jude's. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found at iconic hot dog stands and food trucks across the country. The key to a perfect hot dog with onions lies in the quality of the sausage, the freshness of the bun, and the skillful preparation of the onions.
