Grilled Tofu Steak

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 block of extra firm tofu, pressed and drained
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

Instructions

  • Press the tofu by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel and placing a heavy object on top for 30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to make the marinade.
  • Cut the pressed tofu into 4 equal-sized steaks and place them in a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the tofu steaks, making sure they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours, to allow the flavors to infuse.
  • Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grill grates to prevent sticking.
  • Remove the tofu steaks from the marinade and place them on the grill. Cook for 5-7 minutes on each side, or until grill marks appear and the tofu is heated through.
  • Serve the grilled tofu steaks hot, with your favorite side dishes or barbecue sauce. Enjoy!

Grilled Tofu Steak has a rich history rooted in Asian cuisine, particularly in Japan where tofu has been a dietary staple for centuries. This dish gained popularity in the West as a flavorful and protein-packed alternative to meat. Renowned chefs like Nobu Matsuhisa have elevated the dish by infusing it with their unique culinary flair. Today, the best versions of Grilled Tofu Steak can be found in top-notch vegetarian and vegan restaurants, as well as in high-end Japanese eateries. The key to a perfect Grilled Tofu Steak lies in marinating the tofu in a savory blend of soy sauce, garlic, and ginger, and grilling it to achieve a smoky, caramelized exterior.
