Grilled tempeh has a rich history rooted in Indonesian cuisine, where it has been a staple for centuries. Tempeh, a traditional soy product, is marinated and then grilled to perfection, resulting in a smoky, savory flavor. This dish gained popularity in the West as a vegetarian and vegan alternative to grilled meats. Renowned chefs like Yotam Ottolenghi and Isa Chandra Moskowitz have elevated grilled tempeh with their innovative recipes. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in trendy plant-based restaurants in cities like Portland, Oregon, and Brooklyn, New York. The key to perfect grilled tempeh lies in the marinade, which often includes soy sauce, garlic, and a touch of sweetness. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate spices like cumin and paprika for an extra kick.
