Created by: Nathanielmc1
Ingredients
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/4 inch thick rounds
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Place the sliced potatoes in a large bowl and cover with cold water. Let them soak for 10 minutes to remove excess starch. Drain and pat dry with paper towels.
- In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers.
- Carefully add the sliced potatoes to the hot oil, ensuring they are in a single layer. Sprinkle with salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
- Cook the potatoes for 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried potatoes to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
- Season with additional salt and pepper if desired, and serve hot as a delicious side dish.
Fried potatoes have a rich history dating back to the 17th century when they were first introduced in Europe. The dish gained popularity in the 19th century, with the emergence of the French fry. Chefs like Auguste Escoffier and George Crum are credited with popularizing the dish in their respective regions. Today, the best version of this dish can be found in Belgium, where they are known for their crispy and golden frites. The key to perfect fried potatoes lies in the choice of potatoes and the double-frying method. For a unique twist, consider making Spanish patatas bravas or German bratkartoffeln.
