French toast, also known as "pain perdu" in France, has a rich history dating back to the 4th century. This beloved dish is made by soaking bread in a mixture of eggs, milk, and sugar, then frying it to golden perfection. In the 15th century, it was popularized by European chefs, and today, it's a staple in breakfast menus worldwide. In the US, New Orleans is renowned for its decadent version, often served with powdered sugar and syrup. For the best French toast, use thick slices of brioche or challah bread and let them soak in the egg mixture to ensure a custardy interior.
