French Onion Soup Burger

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  • While the onions are cooking, shape the ground beef into 4 patties and season with salt and pepper. Cook the patties in a separate skillet over medium-high heat until they reach your desired level of doneness, about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare.
  • Once the onions are caramelized, sprinkle the flour over them and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Preheat the broiler. Split the hamburger buns and place them on a baking sheet. Toast under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, until lightly golden.
  • To assemble the burgers, place a cooked patty on the bottom half of each bun. Top with a slice of Swiss cheese and a generous spoonful of the caramelized onion mixture. Sprinkle the Gruyere cheese over the onions. Place the assembled burgers back under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Spread butter on the top half of the buns and place them on top of the melted cheese. Serve the French Onion Soup Burgers hot and enjoy!
