  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced garlic

  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast in 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of bread flour, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and 2 teaspoons of salt. Mix well.
  • Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

  • In another small bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons of dried minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of dried minced onion, 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds, and 2 tablespoons of poppy seeds. Sprinkle this everything seasoning over the bagels.
  • Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown.

The Everything Bagel is a beloved New York City creation that has become a staple in breakfast and brunch menus worldwide. In the 1980s, David Gussin, a baker at a popular bagel shop in Queens, is credited with inventing the Everything Bagel. This iconic bagel is coated with a mix of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, onion, and salt, creating a flavorful and aromatic experience. Today, the Everything Bagel can be found in bakeries, delis, and cafes across the globe, often served with cream cheese, lox, or as a base for breakfast sandwiches. For the best version, head to New York City, where the bagel's legacy lives on in its birthplace.
