Elephant ears, also known as palmiers or elephant ear cookies, have a rich history dating back to the 20th century. This classic French pastry is believed to have originated in the late 1800s and has since become a beloved treat worldwide. The name "elephant ears" comes from the pastry's resemblance to the large, floppy ears of an elephant. These crispy, flaky, and caramelized delights are made from puff pastry and sugar, creating a perfect balance of sweetness and crunch. Chefs and bakeries across France, particularly in Paris, are renowned for their exquisite elephant ears. Today, the best versions of this delectable treat can be found in traditional French patisseries and bakeries, where skilled pastry chefs meticulously craft each palmier to perfection. The key to a great elephant ear lies in the quality of the puff pastry and the precise caramelization of the sugar, resulting in a delightful crunch and a caramelized sweetness that melts in your mouth. While the classic recipe calls for simple ingredients, some variations include adding cinnamon or chocolate for an extra layer of flavor. Whether enjoyed with a cup of coffee in a Parisian cafe or freshly baked from a local bakery, elephant ears continue to captivate pastry enthusiasts with their timeless appeal.
