Dark hot chocolate has a rich history dating back to the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, who enjoyed a bitter, spicy version of the drink. Over time, European explorers brought cocoa beans back to their homelands, where it was sweetened and transformed into the creamy, indulgent beverage we know today. Renowned chefs like Jacques Torres and Dominique Ansel have elevated the classic hot chocolate, using high-quality dark chocolate and unique flavorings. In regions like Belgium and Switzerland, chocolatiers have perfected the art of crafting decadent dark hot chocolate. For the best version, seek out a recipe that calls for premium dark chocolate and a hint of warming spices like cinnamon or chili.
