Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a small saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat.
  • Whisk in 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
  • Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  • Season the bechamel sauce with 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, salt, and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  • Place 4 slices of white bread on a baking sheet and top each with 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Gruyere cheese.
  • Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread to make sandwiches.
  • Spread the bechamel sauce over the top of each sandwich.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the sandwiches are golden and the cheese is melted.
