Instructions

  • Preheat the broiler in your oven.
  • Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and broil for 1-2 minutes on each side until lightly toasted.
  • Top 2 of the bread slices with a slice of ham and a slice of Gruyère cheese. Place the remaining 2 bread slices on top to make sandwiches.
  • In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk and continue cooking, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  • Spread a generous amount of the sauce over the top of each sandwich. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes until the sauce is bubbly and golden brown.
  • In a non-stick skillet, fry the eggs to your desired doneness.
  • Place a fried egg on top of each sandwich and serve immediately.
