Instructions
- Preheat the broiler in your oven.

- Top 2 of the bread slices with a slice of ham and a slice of Gruyère cheese. Place the remaining 2 bread slices on top to make sandwiches.

The Croque Madame is a classic French sandwich that originated in Paris in the early 20th century. It is essentially a variation of the Croque Monsieur, with the addition of a fried or poached egg on top. The dish is said to have been created in a Parisian café as a quick and satisfying snack for the working class. The name "Croque Madame" is believed to have been coined due to the egg resembling a woman's hat. Today, the Croque Madame can be found in bistros and cafes throughout France, and has also gained popularity in other parts of the world. One of the key elements of a perfect Croque Madame is the creamy béchamel sauce that is spread on the sandwich before it's baked or grilled. The best versions of this dish can be found in traditional French bistros, where skilled chefs use high-quality ham, Gruyère cheese, and freshly baked bread to create a decadent and satisfying meal. For a twist on the classic recipe, some chefs add a touch of Dijon mustard or use different types of cheese to elevate the flavors. Whether enjoyed in a cozy Parisian bistro or recreated at home, the Croque Madame continues to be a beloved and indulgent treat for food enthusiasts around the world.
