Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken thighs, diced
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of carrots, diced
  • 1/2 cup of celery, diced
  • 1/2 cup of onion, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 4 cups of chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 2 green onions, chopped

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add 1/2 cup of water, stirring until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  • In a large pot, bring 4 cups of chicken broth to a boil. Add the diced chicken, carrots, celery, onion, and garlic. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
  • While the chicken and vegetables are cooking, roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut the dough into small squares or circles.
  • Carefully drop the dumplings into the simmering broth. Stir gently to prevent sticking. Cook for an additional 10 minutes or until the dumplings are cooked through.
  • Stir in 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper. Simmer for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Serve the chicken and vegetable dumplings hot, garnished with chopped green onions. Enjoy!

Chicken dumplings with added vegetables have a rich history dating back to ancient China, where they were a staple in the royal courts. The dish made its way to the United States with Chinese immigrants in the 19th century and has since become a beloved comfort food. The addition of vegetables like carrots, celery, and peas not only adds a pop of color but also enhances the flavor and nutritional value of the dish. In the southern United States, chefs at renowned restaurants like The Lady and Sons in Savannah, Georgia, have perfected the art of making chicken dumplings with added vegetables. The key to a delicious chicken dumplings dish lies in the tender, flavorful chicken, the perfectly seasoned broth, and the delicate, yet hearty, dumplings. For a twist on the traditional recipe, some chefs opt for adding a touch of ginger or lemongrass for an extra layer of flavor. Today, the best versions of chicken dumplings with added vegetables can be found in family-owned diners and upscale eateries alike, where chefs take pride in using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create a dish that is both comforting and satisfying. Whether it's a classic recipe passed down through generations or a modern interpretation with a creative flair, the addition of vegetables elevates the humble chicken dumplings to a whole new level of culinary delight.
