Garlic-Infused Chicken Dumplings
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 8 cups of water
- 10 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 celery stalks, sliced
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 2 tablespoons of butter
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the chicken pieces, water, half of the minced garlic, onion, carrots, celery, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
- While the broth is simmering, prepare the dumplings. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk until a soft dough forms.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut the dough into small squares or use a cookie cutter to make round dumplings.
- Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the broth and shred the meat. Discard the bones and return the shredded chicken to the pot.
- Strain the broth to remove the vegetables and garlic, then return the broth to the pot. Bring the broth back to a simmer and add the remaining minced garlic for the garlic-infused flavor.
- Drop the dumplings into the simmering broth, a few at a time, stirring gently to prevent sticking. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through and tender.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve the garlic-infused chicken dumplings hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
The history of chicken dumplings with garlic-infused broth dates back to ancient China, where dumplings were a symbol of wealth and prosperity. This comforting dish made its way to the United States through Chinese immigrants, evolving to incorporate local flavors and ingredients. Renowned chefs like Martin Yan and Ming Tsai have popularized this dish in their restaurants, infusing the traditional recipe with modern twists. Today, the best version of this dish can be found in authentic Chinese restaurants, particularly in regions with a strong culinary heritage, such as San Francisco's Chinatown or New York's Chinatown. The key to perfecting this dish lies in the delicate balance of flavors in the garlic-infused broth and the tender, flavorful chicken dumplings. For a unique twist, some chefs also incorporate ginger or scallions into the broth for added depth of flavor.
