Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for 3-4 minutes, then carefully remove the softened outer leaves. Repeat until you have 12-14 leaves. Set aside to cool.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  • Place a spoonful of the beef mixture onto each cabbage leaf, then roll up, tucking in the sides as you go. Place the rolls seam side down in a large baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Pour the sauce over the cabbage rolls.
  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the beef is cooked through.
  • Serve the spicy cabbage rolls with the tomato sauce and enjoy!

Cabbage rolls, also known as golabki or stuffed cabbage, have a rich history dating back to Eastern Europe. This traditional dish consists of tender cabbage leaves filled with a savory mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices, all wrapped up and simmered in a spicy tomato sauce. The origins of cabbage rolls can be traced to Poland, Ukraine, and Russia, where they are a beloved comfort food. Renowned chefs like Olia Hercules and Yotam Ottolenghi have put their own modern twists on this classic recipe, incorporating bold flavors and innovative techniques. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Eastern European restaurants, where the key to perfection lies in the balance of spices and the tenderness of the cabbage leaves. Whether enjoyed as a hearty main course or a flavorful appetizer, cabbage rolls with spicy tomato sauce are a true culinary delight.
