Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 pound ground breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
- Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until the dough comes together.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it 5-6 times. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick circle.
- Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits. Place them on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the biscuits are baking, cook the ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of flour over the sausage and stir to combine.
- Gradually pour in the milk, stirring constantly, and cook until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Split the warm biscuits in half and spoon the sausage gravy over the top. Serve hot and enjoy!
The history of buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy can be traced back to the southern United States, where it has been a beloved comfort food for generations. This classic dish has its roots in the rural kitchens of the South, where resourceful cooks made the most of simple ingredients to create a hearty and satisfying meal. The buttermilk biscuits are a staple of Southern cuisine, known for their tender, flaky texture and rich, buttery flavor. They are made with buttermilk, which gives them a tangy taste and a light, airy crumb. The biscuits are often baked to golden perfection, with a slightly crisp exterior and a soft, pillowy interior. The sausage gravy, on the other hand, is a creamy and savory sauce made with ground sausage, flour, milk, and a blend of spices. It is typically served over the warm, freshly baked biscuits, creating a decadent and indulgent dish that is perfect for breakfast or brunch. In the South, this dish is a staple on the menus of diners, cafes, and family-owned restaurants. Chefs and home cooks alike take pride in perfecting their biscuit and gravy recipes, often passing down their techniques and secrets through generations. Today, some of the best versions of this dish can be found in renowned Southern eateries, where chefs use high-quality ingredients and time-honored methods to create the perfect buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy. The key to getting this dish right lies in the balance of flavors and textures – the biscuits should be tender and flaky, while the gravy should be rich, creamy, and packed with savory sausage flavor. While the classic recipe for buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy remains a favorite, there are also alternative methods for making this dish. Some chefs add a touch of heat with the addition of spicy sausage or a dash of hot sauce, while others experiment with different herbs and seasonings to elevate the flavors. Whether enjoyed in a cozy Southern diner or made from scratch in a home kitchen, buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy continue to be a beloved comfort food that celebrates the rich culinary heritage of the South.
