Gluten-Free Broccoli Cheddar Quiche
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups of gluten-free all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 4-6 tablespoons of ice water
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cups of fresh broccoli florets, chopped
- 6 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups of milk
- 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a food processor, combine 1 1/2 cups of gluten-free all-purpose flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add the cold butter pieces and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- While pulsing, gradually add the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and shape it into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Press the dough into the dish and trim any excess. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork and bake for 15 minutes, or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and set aside.
- In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the chopped broccoli and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 6 eggs and 1 1/2 cups of milk. Stir in the cooked broccoli and onion mixture, and 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Pour the egg mixture into the pre-baked gluten-free crust. Place the quiche in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let the quiche cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your gluten-free broccoli cheddar quiche!
The history of Broccoli Cheddar Quiche with a gluten-free crust dates back to the 16th century in France, where quiche originated. The dish gained popularity in the United States during the 1970s and has since become a staple in brunch menus and home cooking. The gluten-free crust variation emerged as a response to the growing demand for gluten-free options. Renowned chefs like Julia Child and Jacques Pépin have popularized the classic quiche Lorraine, inspiring variations like the Broccoli Cheddar Quiche. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in artisanal bakeries and farm-to-table restaurants, where fresh, locally sourced ingredients are used to create a flavorful and flaky gluten-free crust. To make the perfect Broccoli Cheddar Quiche with a gluten-free crust, it's essential to use high-quality cheddar cheese and fresh broccoli, as they are the stars of the dish. Additionally, incorporating a blend of gluten-free flours and cold butter is crucial for achieving a tender and crispy crust. For those looking for an alternative method, using a mix of almond flour and tapioca flour can result in a delicious gluten-free crust with a nutty flavor and delightful texture.
