- 1/4 cup of unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups of whole milk
- 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1/4 cup of breadcrumbs
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Steam the broccoli florets until tender, about 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter over medium heat. Stir in 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in 1 1/2 cups of whole milk and continue cooking until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Remove the sauce from the heat and fold in the steamed broccoli florets. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top, followed by 1/4 cup of breadcrumbs.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.
- Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Broccoli and Cheese Casserole is a classic comfort food dish that has been a staple in American households for decades. This creamy, cheesy casserole is a popular side dish, especially during holiday gatherings and potlucks. The dish typically consists of fresh broccoli florets, a rich cheese sauce, and a crunchy breadcrumb topping. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on this timeless recipe, adding ingredients like bacon, onions, or different types of cheese to enhance the flavor. In the Southern United States, this casserole is often a featured dish at family gatherings and church suppers, where it's known for its indulgent, soul-warming qualities. One famous alternative method for making this dish is to use Ritz crackers as the topping instead of breadcrumbs, adding a buttery, savory crunch to the casserole. The key to a perfect Broccoli and Cheese Casserole lies in the balance of creamy cheese sauce and tender-crisp broccoli, creating a dish that is both comforting and satisfying. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in cozy, family-owned diners and restaurants that specialize in traditional American comfort food. The most important elements to get right in this recipe are the cheese sauce, which should be velvety and flavorful, and the broccoli, which should be cooked to perfection - tender but still with a bit of bite.
