Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup dark rum
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter over medium heat.
- Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the skillet. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is bubbly.
- Carefully add the sliced bananas to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, gently stirring to coat the bananas with the caramel sauce.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and carefully add 1/4 cup of dark rum. Return the skillet to the heat and carefully ignite the rum with a long lighter or match. Let the flames die down.
- Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Serve the Cinnamon Banana Foster immediately over vanilla ice cream, if desired. Enjoy!
The history of Banana Foster dates back to 1951, when it was created at Brennan's Restaurant in New Orleans. This delectable dessert was named after Richard Foster, a friend of the restaurant's owner. The dish features ripe bananas cooked in a buttery, sugary, and cinnamon-infused sauce, flambéed with rum and served over vanilla ice cream. The combination of sweet bananas, warm cinnamon, and fiery rum creates a tantalizing flavor explosion. Today, the best version of this dish can still be found at Brennan's Restaurant, where skilled chefs expertly prepare and flambe the dish tableside, delighting diners with a spectacular culinary show. The key to getting this dish right lies in using perfectly ripe bananas and high-quality cinnamon to achieve a harmonious balance of flavors. If you're feeling adventurous, you can also try a famous alternative method of making Banana Foster by grilling the bananas for a smoky twist on this classic dessert.
