  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 4 slices of bacon
  • 6 cups water

Instructions

  • Rinse the navy beans and place them in a large pot. Cover with 6 cups of water and let soak overnight.

  • In a small bowl, mix together ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper.
  • Stir the ketchup mixture and chopped onion into the cooked beans. Pour the mixture into a 2-quart baking dish.
  • Lay the bacon slices on top of the beans.
  • Cover the baking dish with a lid or aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
  • Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the beans are thick and bubbly, and the bacon is crispy.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Side Dish
American

Baked beans have a rich history dating back to Native American tribes who mixed beans with maple syrup and bear fat, then cooked them in earthenware pots. The dish gained popularity in the American colonies and was further popularized in the 19th century by chefs like Maria Parloa. Today, baked beans are a staple in American and British cuisine, often enjoyed with barbecue or as a breakfast side. The best version of this dish can be found in New England, where molasses is a key ingredient. For a twist, try Boston baked beans, which include salt pork for added flavor.
