Homemade Bagel
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 cups of bread flour
- 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt
- 1 tablespoon of instant yeast
- 1 1/4 cups of warm water
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon of water
- Everything bagel seasoning (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 4 cups of bread flour, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and 1 tablespoon of instant yeast.
- Add 1 1/4 cups of warm water and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center and stretch it to form a bagel shape.
- In a large pot, bring water and honey to a boil. Boil the bagels, 2 at a time, for 1 minute on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, beat 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the egg wash over the bagels and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning, if desired.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool before serving.
The bagel has a rich history dating back to 17th century Poland, where it was first created by Jewish bakers. This iconic bread product made its way to the United States with Eastern European immigrants, particularly to New York City, where it became a staple of the local cuisine. The traditional method of making bagels involves boiling the dough before baking, resulting in a chewy interior and a crispy crust. Today, the best bagels can still be found in New York City, particularly in the borough of Brooklyn. The key to a perfect bagel lies in the dough, which should be dense and slightly sweet, and the boiling process, which gives it that distinctive texture. Some famous alternative methods for making bagels include using sourdough starter or adding unique toppings like everything seasoning or blueberries.
