Ingredients

  • 1 cup of long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 cans of tuna, drained
  • 1 cup of frozen peas
  • 1/2 cup of chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup of butter
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add 1 cup of rice, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked rice, 2 cans of drained tuna, 1 cup of frozen peas, and 1/2 cup of chopped onion. Mix well and transfer to the prepared baking dish.
  • In a separate saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat. Stir in 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour to form a roux. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper until the cheese is melted.
  • Pour the cheese sauce over the tuna and rice mixture in the baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  • Sprinkle 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs over the top of the casserole.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Tuna and Rice Casserole, a classic comfort food dish, has been a staple in American households for decades. This hearty casserole typically consists of canned tuna, cooked rice, creamy sauce, and a crunchy topping. It gained popularity during the mid-20th century as a convenient and budget-friendly meal option. Chefs and home cooks have put their own spin on the dish, adding ingredients like peas, cheese, and breadcrumbs for extra flavor and texture. While there isn't a specific region or restaurant associated with Tuna and Rice Casserole, it remains a beloved dish across the United States. For the best version, ensuring the tuna is high-quality and the creamy sauce is well-seasoned is crucial. Some alternative methods include using different types of grains like quinoa or adding a spicy kick with jalapenos for a unique twist on this timeless dish.
