  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  • Add the melted butter, milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  • In the meantime, prepare the nut filling by mixing the chopped walnuts, almonds, honey, and ground cinnamon in a small bowl.
  • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal parts.
  • Roll out each part into a rectangle and spread the nut filling evenly over the surface of each rectangle.
  • Roll up each rectangle tightly, tucking in the ends, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Cover the loaves with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-40 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the loaves for 30-40 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Allow the Tsoureki to cool before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

Greek

Tsoureki, a traditional Greek sweet bread, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Originally made to celebrate Easter, this braided bread is now enjoyed year-round. The addition of a nut filling adds a delightful crunch and depth of flavor to this beloved treat. Chefs in regions like Thessaloniki and Athens are known for their expertise in crafting the perfect Tsoureki with nut filling. The key to achieving the best version of this dish lies in the quality of the nuts and the precise balance of sweetness in the filling. For a unique twist, some recipes call for a blend of walnuts, almonds, and pistachios, creating a symphony of nutty goodness. Whether enjoyed with a cup of Greek coffee or as a dessert, Tsoureki with nut filling is a delightful indulgence that captures the essence of Greek culinary tradition.
