Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110° to 115°)
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 to 4-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve 1 package of active dry yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water. Let it stand for 5 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, 1/3 cup of softened butter, 1/4 cup of sugar, salt, eggs, and 2 cups of flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Punch the dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 16x12-inch rectangle. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon. Spread the melted butter over the dough and sprinkle with the brown sugar mixture. Sprinkle with nuts and raisins if desired.
  • Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side. Cut into 12 slices. Place the slices cut side down in a greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 1 minute before inverting onto a serving platter. Serve warm and enjoy!

Sticky buns, also known as cinnamon rolls, have a rich history dating back to the 18th century. This delectable treat is believed to have originated in Germany before making its way to the United States with German immigrants. The dough is typically made with flour, yeast, sugar, and butter, while the filling consists of brown sugar, cinnamon, and sometimes nuts or raisins. The buns are then topped with a sticky glaze made from butter and brown sugar, creating a gooey, sweet finish. Chefs like Cinnabon have popularized this indulgent pastry, and today, the best versions can be found in renowned bakeries and cafes across the country. To make the perfect sticky buns, it's crucial to achieve the right balance of cinnamon and sugar in the filling, as well as a gooey, caramelized glaze on top. While traditional methods involve baking the buns in a pan with the glaze at the bottom, some chefs prefer to invert the buns after baking for an extra sticky finish. Whether enjoyed for breakfast or as a sweet treat any time of day, sticky buns with a cinnamon swirl are a beloved indulgence with a rich and flavorful history.
