Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup sliced pickled jalapenos
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into 16 meatballs.
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
- Pour 1 cup of marinara sauce over the meatballs and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, slice the hoagie rolls in half and place them on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for 3-5 minutes, until lightly crispy.
- Place 4 meatballs in each hoagie roll, spoon some marinara sauce over the meatballs, and sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Return the sandwiches to the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Top with sliced pickled jalapenos and serve hot.
The spicy meatball sub has a rich history rooted in Italian-American cuisine. This iconic sandwich is believed to have originated in the early 20th century in the Italian immigrant communities of the United States. Renowned chefs like Mario Batali and Giada De Laurentiis have popularized their own versions of this classic dish, adding their unique twists to the traditional recipe. The key to a perfect spicy meatball sub lies in the flavorful meatballs, zesty marinara sauce, and the perfect balance of spices. Today, some of the best versions of this dish can be found in Italian delis and restaurants across New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. For a unique twist, consider using spicy Italian sausage in the meatball mixture for an extra kick of heat.
