The spicy meatball sub has a rich history rooted in Italian-American cuisine. This iconic sandwich is believed to have originated in the early 20th century in the Italian immigrant communities of the United States. Renowned chefs like Mario Batali and Giada De Laurentiis have popularized their own versions of this classic dish, adding their unique twists to the traditional recipe. The key to a perfect spicy meatball sub lies in the flavorful meatballs, zesty marinara sauce, and the perfect balance of spices. Today, some of the best versions of this dish can be found in Italian delis and restaurants across New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. For a unique twist, consider using spicy Italian sausage in the meatball mixture for an extra kick of heat.
