Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pre-cooked shredded beef
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix the pre-cooked shredded beef and shredded mozzarella cheese. Set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal, warm water, and salt. Knead the mixture until a smooth dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten each ball to form a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the arepas for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the drained and rinsed black beans. Season with cumin, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beans are heated through and well seasoned.
  • Slice each arepa in half horizontally, without cutting all the way through. Stuff each arepa with the shredded beef and cheese mixture.
  • Serve the stuffed arepas with the seasoned black beans on the side. Enjoy!

Shredded Beef and Cheese Arepas are a beloved dish originating from Venezuela, where they are a staple of the local cuisine. These savory cornmeal patties are filled with tender, flavorful shredded beef and gooey, melted cheese, creating a perfect blend of textures and flavors. The addition of a side of black beans adds a rich, earthy element to the meal, complementing the arepas beautifully. One renowned chef known for his exceptional arepas is Chef Carlos La Cruz, who hails from Caracas, Venezuela. His restaurant, La Casa del Arepa, is famous for serving up these delectable treats, drawing in locals and tourists alike. The key to perfecting this dish lies in the quality of the shredded beef, which should be tender and well-seasoned, and the cheese, which should be gooey and flavorful. The arepa itself should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, providing the ideal vessel for the delicious fillings. For a twist on the traditional recipe, some chefs also add a touch of avocado or a drizzle of tangy salsa to enhance the flavors even further. Whether enjoyed at a bustling street food stall in Caracas or a trendy urban eatery in New York City, Shredded Beef and Cheese Arepas with a side of black beans are a true delight for the senses.
