Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 4 cups mashed sweet potatoes
- 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.

- Sprinkle the flour over the beef and vegetable mixture, and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Stir in the frozen peas, then transfer the mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the mashed sweet potatoes and butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spread the sweet potato mixture over the beef and vegetable filling in the baking dish, smoothing it out with a spatula.
- Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese over the top of the sweet potato layer.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling and the sweet potato topping is lightly golden.
- Allow the Shepherd's Pie to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Shepherd's Pie, a classic comfort food, has a rich history dating back to the late 1700s in the UK. Traditionally made with a savory meat filling topped with mashed potatoes, this dish has evolved over the years. The sweet potato topping variation adds a delightful twist, infusing the dish with a hint of sweetness and a vibrant orange hue. Chefs and home cooks alike have embraced this modern take on the traditional recipe, creating a perfect balance of flavors. In recent years, restaurants in the United States have popularized the sweet potato version, offering a delectable alternative to the original. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in cozy, family-owned eateries that take pride in using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. The key to nailing this dish lies in achieving a harmonious blend of seasoned ground meat, aromatic vegetables, and a lusciously creamy sweet potato topping. For those seeking a famous alternative method, some chefs recommend incorporating a touch of cinnamon or nutmeg into the sweet potato mash for an extra layer of warmth and complexity.
