Seared Tuna with Quinoa

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 4 tuna steaks (6 ounces each)
  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions

Instructions

  • Rinse the quinoa under cold water using a fine-mesh strainer. In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the rinsed quinoa, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, garlic, and sesame oil to make the marinade for the tuna steaks.
  • Season the tuna steaks with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over high heat. Once the skillet is hot, add the tuna steaks and sear for 2 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or longer if desired. Remove from the skillet and let them rest for a few minutes.
  • While the tuna is resting, divide the cooked quinoa among 4 plates. Place a seared tuna steak on top of the quinoa on each plate.
  • Drizzle the tuna steaks with the prepared marinade and sprinkle with chopped green onions. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Seared tuna with quinoa is a modern twist on a classic dish, combining the rich flavors of seared tuna with the nutty, earthy taste of quinoa. This fusion dish has its roots in the culinary creativity of chefs looking to offer a healthier and more diverse alternative to traditional wild rice pairings. The trend gained popularity in coastal regions, where fresh tuna is abundant and quinoa is celebrated for its nutritional value. Notable restaurants like Nobu and Morimoto have showcased their take on this dish, elevating it to a gourmet level. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in upscale seafood restaurants and fusion eateries, where the quality of the tuna and the perfectly cooked quinoa are paramount. The key to mastering this dish lies in the precise searing of the tuna to achieve a crispy exterior while maintaining a tender, rare center, and the proper preparation of the quinoa to ensure a fluffy, flavorful accompaniment. For a unique twist, some chefs incorporate Asian-inspired marinades or dressings, adding a burst of umami and complexity to the dish.
