Sausage and Mash
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 8 pork sausages
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef stock
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place the sausages on a baking sheet and roast in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
- While the sausages are cooking, place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the milk and butter, then mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- In a separate pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until softened and lightly browned.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then gradually pour in the beef stock, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens.
- Serve the sausages on top of the mashed potatoes, and pour the onion gravy over the top. Enjoy!
Sausage and Mash, a classic British dish, has been a staple of comfort food for centuries. The dish consists of juicy sausages, often made with pork or beef, served with creamy mashed potatoes and rich onion gravy. Dating back to the 18th century, it was a popular meal among the working class due to its affordability and hearty nature. Today, renowned chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay have put their own spin on this traditional dish, elevating it to gourmet status. The best version of this dish can be found in traditional British pubs, where the sausages are often sourced locally and the mashed potatoes are whipped to perfection. The key to a great Sausage and Mash lies in the quality of the sausages and the smoothness of the mashed potatoes. For a twist, some chefs add caramelized onions or peas to the dish, adding depth to the flavors. Whether enjoyed in a cozy pub or homemade in the kitchen, Sausage and Mash continues to be a beloved comfort food that warms the soul.
