  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/3 cup of breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup of finely chopped onion, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix until well combined, then shape into 4 oval patties.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned. Remove the patties and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and mushrooms. Cook for 5-6 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
  • In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Pour the beef broth into the skillet with the vegetables, then stir in the cornstarch slurry. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  • Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
  • Serve the salisbury steak patties with the mushroom gravy spooned over the top. Enjoy!

American

Salisbury steak is a classic American dish with a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. It was created by Dr. James Salisbury, an American physician who advocated for a meat-centric diet for health reasons. The dish consists of ground beef patties mixed with breadcrumbs and seasonings, then smothered in a savory gravy. It's often served with mashed potatoes or rice, making it a hearty and comforting meal. Today, salisbury steak can be found on the menus of diners and family-style restaurants across the United States. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on the dish, adding ingredients like onions, mushrooms, and Worcestershire sauce to enhance the flavor. Some popular variations include using ground turkey or adding a touch of ketchup for a hint of sweetness. For the best version of this dish, look for a restaurant or diner that takes pride in using high-quality ground beef and crafting a rich, flavorful gravy. The key to a delicious salisbury steak lies in the seasoning and cooking method, as well as the quality of the beef. Whether it's a nostalgic favorite or a new discovery, salisbury steak continues to hold a special place in American comfort food cuisine.
