Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 2 cans of young green jackfruit in brine, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: coleslaw, pickles, avocado

Instructions

  • Using your hands or a fork, shred the jackfruit into small pieces, discarding any tough core pieces.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add the shredded jackfruit to the skillet and stir to combine with the onion and garlic.
  • Pour in the barbecue sauce, vegetable broth, smoked paprika, cumin, and chili powder. Stir to coat the jackfruit evenly with the sauce and spices.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the jackfruit is tender and the sauce has thickened.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • While the jackfruit is cooking, lightly toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or on a skillet.
  • Once the jackfruit is ready, spoon a generous amount onto the bottom half of each bun. Add any optional toppings as desired, then place the top half of the bun on top.
  • Serve the pulled jackfruit sandwiches immediately and enjoy!

The Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich has its roots in Southeast Asian cuisine, where jackfruit has been a staple for centuries. This vegan alternative to pulled pork gained popularity in the West as a meatless option. Chefs like Chloe Coscarelli and restaurants such as The Cinnamon Snail in New York City helped popularize the dish. The best versions of this dish can be found in vegan and vegetarian restaurants, where chefs masterfully season and slow-cook the jackfruit to achieve a tender, pulled texture. The key to a delicious Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich lies in the seasoning and cooking method, ensuring the fruit absorbs the flavors and mimics the texture of traditional pulled pork.
