Pretzel Dog with Chili Dip
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 10 cups water
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 8 beef hot dogs
- 1 can of chili
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 2 teaspoons of salt. Sprinkle 1 package of active dry yeast over the mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Add 4 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and melted 1/4 cup of unsalted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until the dough comes together.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and 2/3 cup of baking soda to a rolling boil.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, then wrap it around a beef hot dog, pinching the ends to seal. Carefully drop each pretzel dog into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake the pretzel dogs in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- While the pretzel dogs are baking, heat the chili in a small saucepan over medium heat until warmed through.
- Serve the pretzel dogs with the warm chili for dipping. Enjoy!
The history of the Pretzel Dog with a side of chili for dipping can be traced back to the fusion of German and American culinary traditions. The pretzel, a beloved German snack, was combined with the American hot dog to create a delicious and satisfying treat. The addition of chili for dipping adds a spicy and savory twist to the classic combination. Chefs in regions with strong German and American influences, such as the Midwest and Pennsylvania, have perfected the art of making the Pretzel Dog with a side of chili. The key to a great Pretzel Dog lies in the quality of the pretzel dough, which should be soft, chewy, and perfectly salted. The hot dog should be juicy and flavorful, and the chili should be rich and well-seasoned. Today, the best versions of the Pretzel Dog with chili can be found in specialty hot dog shops and food trucks across the United States. Some chefs have also experimented with alternative methods, such as stuffing the pretzel dough with cheese or jalapenos for an extra kick of flavor. Whether enjoyed as a quick snack or a hearty meal, the Pretzel Dog with a side of chili is a delicious and satisfying treat for food lovers everywhere.
