- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 packet of active dry yeast
- 1 cup of warm water
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- 1 egg, beaten
- Coarse salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 packet of active dry yeast.
- Gradually stir in 1 cup of warm water until the dough comes together.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy the pretzel breadsticks with your favorite dips or on their own.
Pretzel breadsticks have a rich history dating back to the early days of German cuisine. These delectable snacks are a variation of the traditional pretzel, known for their twisted shape and chewy texture. The dough is typically made with flour, water, yeast, and a touch of sugar, then twisted into long, thin sticks before being baked to golden perfection. Chefs in Bavaria, Germany, are renowned for their expertise in crafting these savory treats, often serving them alongside mustard or cheese dips. Today, the best versions of pretzel breadsticks can be found in artisanal bakeries and German-inspired restaurants, where they are enjoyed as a delightful appetizer or snack. The key to achieving the perfect pretzel breadstick lies in achieving the ideal balance of chewiness and a crispy exterior, achieved through the unique process of boiling the dough before baking. For a fun twist, some chefs incorporate various toppings such as sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or even a sprinkle of coarse salt to enhance the flavor profile. Whether enjoyed on their own or paired with a savory dip, pretzel breadsticks continue to be a beloved snack with a rich culinary heritage.
