Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110° to 115°)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3-1/4 to 3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve 1 package of active dry yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water. Let it stand for 5 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, melted butter, salt, egg, yeast mixture, and 2 cups of flour. Beat until smooth.
  • Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Punch the dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 16x10-in. rectangle.
  • In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, pecans, softened butter, and cinnamon. Spread over dough to within 1/2 inch of edges.
  • Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side. Pinch the seam to seal.
  • Cut into 12 slices. Place cut side down in a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Cool in the pan for 1 minute before removing to a wire rack. Enjoy warm.

Pecan rolls are a classic Southern treat, featuring a sweet, gooey filling of brown sugar, butter, and pecans, all rolled up in a soft, fluffy dough. This indulgent pastry has a rich history, with roots in the American South, where it has been a beloved dessert for generations. The dish is often associated with iconic Southern chefs and restaurants, such as the renowned Brennan's in New Orleans, where pecan rolls are a staple on the menu. To make the best pecan rolls, it's crucial to get the filling just right, ensuring a perfect balance of sweetness and nuttiness. For a unique twist, some chefs incorporate bourbon or cinnamon into the filling, adding depth of flavor. Today, the best pecan rolls can be found in local bakeries and cafes across the South, where they continue to delight dessert lovers with their irresistible combination of caramelized pecans and pillowy dough.
