Ingredients
- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Sprinkle 1/4 cup of granulated sugar on a clean work surface.
- Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet onto the sugar and sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar on top of the pastry.
- Use a rolling pin to gently roll the pastry, pressing the sugar into the dough on both sides.
- Fold the sides of the pastry in towards the center, then fold the sides again so they meet in the middle. Fold the pastry in half one more time.
- Slice the pastry into 1/2 inch slices and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each palmier.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the palmiers are golden brown and caramelized.
- Allow the palmiers to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Enjoy your delicious homemade palmiers!
Palmiers, also known as elephant ears or palm leaves, are a classic French pastry with a history dating back to the 17th century. The name "palmier" refers to its resemblance to a palm leaf. This delectable treat is made from puff pastry that is rolled in sugar, creating a caramelized, crispy texture. Renowned French chefs like Auguste Escoffier and Marie-Antoine Carême have popularized palmiers, and today, they are enjoyed worldwide. In France, they are often served with coffee or tea as a sweet indulgence. The best palmiers can be found in traditional French patisseries, where skilled pastry chefs meticulously craft each delicate layer of flaky pastry. For a twist, some chefs add cinnamon or chocolate to the sugar filling, elevating the flavor profile. Whether enjoyed in a quaint Parisian café or homemade in your kitchen, palmiers are a delightful treat for any occasion.
