Navajo Tacos
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 packet taco seasoning
- 1 can (15 oz) refried beans
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup diced red onion
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup salsa
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add 1 cup of warm water, stirring until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes, then cover and let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal portions. On a floured surface, roll each portion into a 1/4-inch thick circle.
- In a large skillet, heat 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Fry the dough circles one at a time until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
- In a separate skillet, cook 1 pound of ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat, then stir in 1 packet of taco seasoning and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
- Warm 1 can of refried beans in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- To assemble the Navajo tacos, spread a generous spoonful of refried beans on each fry bread, then top with the seasoned ground beef, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, red onion, shredded cheddar cheese, cilantro, sour cream, and salsa.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Navajo tacos, also known as Indian tacos, have a rich history rooted in the Navajo Nation. This beloved dish features a crispy frybread base topped with flavorful ingredients like seasoned ground beef, beans, lettuce, cheese, and salsa. The frybread is a symbol of resilience and resourcefulness, as it originated from the rations provided to the Navajo people during their forced relocation in the 1860s. Today, renowned chefs and restaurants across the American Southwest, particularly in Arizona and New Mexico, serve up delicious variations of Navajo tacos. For an authentic experience, visit the Navajo Nation Fair in Arizona, where you can savor the best version of this iconic dish. The key to a perfect Navajo taco lies in the frybread - it should be light, fluffy, and perfectly golden brown. Some alternative methods for making this dish include using bison or elk meat for a unique twist on the traditional recipe.
