The Mojito is a classic Cuban cocktail with a refreshing blend of rum, mint, lime, sugar, and soda water. Its origins date back to the 16th century when Sir Francis Drake and his crew used a similar concoction to combat scurvy. The modern Mojito gained popularity in Havana, Cuba, where it was a favorite of author Ernest Hemingway. Today, the best Mojitos can still be found in Cuba, particularly in the vibrant bars of Old Havana. The key to a perfect Mojito lies in using fresh, high-quality ingredients, especially fragrant mint and tangy lime. Some variations include adding fruits like strawberries or pineapple for a unique twist.
