Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 package of shredded phyllo dough
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup of ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of orange blossom water
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pistachios
  • 1/2 cup of semolina
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, mix the shredded phyllo dough with the melted butter until well coated.
  • Press half of the phyllo dough mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form an even layer.
  • In another bowl, mix together the mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheese, sugar, and orange blossom water. Spread this cheese mixture evenly over the phyllo dough layer.
  • Top the cheese mixture with the remaining phyllo dough, pressing it down gently to form an even layer.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the kunafa is golden brown and crispy.
  • While the kunafa is baking, prepare the sugar syrup by combining the semolina, water, and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a syrup. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Once the kunafa is done baking, remove it from the oven and pour the sugar syrup over the top, allowing it to soak in for a few minutes.
  • In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth and melted.
  • Drizzle the melted chocolate over the kunafa, then sprinkle with chopped pistachios.
  • Allow the kunafa to cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

Middle Eastern

Kunafa, a beloved Middle Eastern dessert, has a rich history dating back to the 10th century. This delectable treat consists of shredded phyllo dough filled with sweet cheese or nuts, soaked in sugar syrup, and baked to golden perfection. The addition of a luscious chocolate drizzle adds a modern twist to this traditional dish, creating a delightful fusion of flavors. Renowned chefs in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine, have perfected the art of making kunafa, with each region adding its own unique touch. Today, the best versions of kunafa with a chocolate drizzle can be savored in specialty bakeries and restaurants across the Middle East. The key to achieving the perfect kunafa lies in the balance of textures and flavors, as well as the quality of the ingredients. While the classic version of kunafa remains a favorite, the chocolate drizzle offers a decadent alternative that is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.
