Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup jelly or jam
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease and line a 10x15 inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat 4 eggs and 3/4 cup of white sugar together until thick and pale in color, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, sift together 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared jelly roll pan and spread it out evenly.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the cake is golden and springs back when lightly touched.
  • While the cake is baking, lay a clean kitchen towel on the counter and dust it with 1/4 cup of powdered sugar.
  • Once the cake is done, immediately invert it onto the prepared towel. Carefully peel off the parchment paper.
  • Starting at one short end, roll the cake and towel together into a tight spiral. Place seam side down on a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Once the cake has cooled, carefully unroll it and spread 1/2 cup of jelly or jam evenly over the surface.
  • Roll the cake back up without the towel and place it seam side down on a serving platter.
  • Dust the top with additional powdered sugar if desired.
  • Slice and serve the jelly roll. Enjoy!
Dessert
American

Jelly Roll, also known as Swiss Roll, is a classic dessert with a rich history. Originating in Europe, this sweet treat gained popularity in the United States during the 19th century. The cake is made by spreading a thin layer of sponge cake batter onto a baking sheet, baking it, and then rolling it up with a sweet filling, often jelly or cream. Chefs and home bakers alike have put their own spin on this beloved dessert, with variations in fillings and flavors. Today, the best versions of Jelly Roll can be found in traditional bakeries and pastry shops, where skilled bakers craft these delicate treats with precision and care. The key to a perfect Jelly Roll lies in achieving a light, fluffy sponge cake and a smooth, evenly distributed filling. While traditional jelly fillings are popular, modern twists include chocolate, fruit, and even savory options. Whether enjoyed as a nostalgic treat or a modern indulgence, Jelly Roll continues to delight dessert lovers around the world.
