Italian Sausage and Pepper Hoagie with Caramelized Onions
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 Italian sausage links
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 bell peppers, sliced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 4 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage links and cook for 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the sliced onions and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Add the sliced bell peppers to the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until they are tender-crisp. Season with salt and black pepper.
- Slice the Italian sausage links into bite-sized pieces and return them to the skillet with the peppers. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Open the hoagie rolls and place a slice of provolone cheese on one side of each roll. Place the rolls on a baking sheet and bake for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the rolls are lightly toasted.
- Divide the sausage and pepper mixture among the hoagie rolls. Top with the caramelized onions and serve immediately.
The Italian Sausage and Pepper Hoagie, with the addition of caramelized onions, is a beloved classic in Italian-American cuisine. Originating in the streets of Philadelphia, this hearty sandwich is a flavorful combination of sweet and savory. The sizzling sausages, vibrant peppers, and rich caramelized onions are nestled in a soft hoagie roll, creating a symphony of flavors and textures. Renowned chefs like Mario Batali and Lidia Bastianich have popularized this dish, infusing it with their own unique twists. The dish has its roots in the Italian immigrant communities of the Northeastern United States, where it became a staple in local eateries and family kitchens. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in authentic Italian delis and restaurants in cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. The key to a perfect Italian Sausage and Pepper Hoagie lies in the quality of the ingredients - from the fennel-infused Italian sausages to the sweet and tangy peppers, and of course, the perfectly caramelized onions. For a delicious alternative, some chefs recommend slow-cooking the sausages and peppers in a rich tomato sauce before piling them onto the hoagie roll, adding an extra depth of flavor to the dish. Whether enjoyed at a bustling street fair or a cozy neighborhood deli, the Italian Sausage and Pepper Hoagie with caramelized onions is a true celebration of Italian culinary tradition.
