Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 4 Italian sausage links
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage links and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil and sauté the sliced bell peppers, onion, and minced garlic until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with dried oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
  • While the peppers and onions are cooking, slice the hoagie rolls in half and spread each half with 1 tablespoon of butter and sprinkle with minced garlic and Parmesan cheese. Place the hoagie rolls on a baking sheet and toast in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Once the peppers and onions are done, return the browned Italian sausage links to the skillet and toss to combine with the peppers and onions. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
  • To assemble the hoagies, place a sausage link and a generous portion of the pepper and onion mixture on each garlic bread hoagie roll. Serve hot and enjoy!

The Italian Sausage and Pepper Hoagie, served on garlic bread, is a beloved dish that originated in Italian-American communities. This hearty sandwich is a delicious combination of sweet Italian sausage, sautéed peppers, and onions, all nestled in a soft hoagie roll. This iconic dish has its roots in the Italian-American neighborhoods of cities like Philadelphia and New York, where it was a staple at family-owned delis and restaurants. The aroma of sizzling sausage and peppers wafting from street carts and local eateries became synonymous with Italian-American cuisine. One renowned chef known for perfecting this dish is Chef Mario Batali, whose authentic approach to Italian cooking has earned him a dedicated following. Today, this classic dish can be found in Italian-American eateries across the United States, with each region adding its own unique twist. For the best version of this dish, seek out a restaurant that uses high-quality sweet Italian sausage, perfectly caramelized peppers and onions, and freshly baked garlic bread.
