Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup of white sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
- 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups of warm milk
- 1/4 cup of melted butter
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup of raisins
- 1/4 cup of candied mixed peel
- 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 4 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon of allspice, and 1/4 teaspoon of cloves.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve 1 tablespoon of yeast in 1 1/4 cups of warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Mix the yeast mixture, 1/4 cup of melted butter, and 1 beaten egg into the dry ingredients. Stir in the raisins and candied peel.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let them rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of water to make a paste. Pipe a cross on top of each bun using the flour paste.
- Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.
- While the buns are baking, mix 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and enough water to make a thick icing. Once the buns are done, let them cool for 5 minutes, then pipe the icing over the crosses.
- Allow the buns to cool completely before serving. Enjoy!
Hot cross buns have a rich history dating back to ancient times, with roots in pagan and Christian traditions. These spiced, sweet buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday to mark the end of Lent. The cross on top symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus, while the spices represent the embalming of his body. In the 12th century, a monk named Father Thomas Rocliffe began distributing these buns to the poor on Good Friday, leading to their widespread popularity. Today, hot cross buns are enjoyed worldwide, with variations in recipes and flavors. Chefs like Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry have popularized these buns through their baking shows, and renowned bakeries like Betty's in Yorkshire, England, are known for their exceptional hot cross buns. To make the perfect hot cross bun, it's crucial to get the balance of spices and dried fruits just right, and to achieve a soft, fluffy texture. For a unique twist, some bakers incorporate chocolate chips or orange zest into the dough, adding a delightful modern touch to this classic treat. Whether enjoyed fresh from the oven or toasted with a generous slather of butter, hot cross buns continue to be a beloved Easter tradition.
