Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast in 1 cup of warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Stir in 1/4 cup of honey and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
- Add 1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan, cover, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Honey wheat bread has been a beloved staple for centuries, with its origins dating back to ancient Egypt. This wholesome bread gained popularity in the United States during the health-conscious movement of the 1970s. Renowned chefs like Bobby Flay and Ina Garten have put their own spin on this classic recipe, incorporating local honey and whole wheat flour for a nutty, slightly sweet flavor. The best versions of this dish can be found in artisanal bakeries across the country, where skilled bakers use traditional methods to achieve the perfect balance of honey and wheat. For a unique twist, some bakers add ingredients like oats or flaxseeds for added texture and nutrition.
