Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 cup of semolina
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1/2 cup of plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1/4 cup of blanched almonds, sliced
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x9 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of semolina, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of plain yogurt, 1/4 cup of melted unsalted butter, and 1 teaspoon of baking powder until well combined.
- Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Using a sharp knife, score the top of the batter into diamond or square shapes, then place a blanched almond slice in the center of each piece.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
- While the hareeseh is baking, prepare the simple syrup by combining 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of water, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Once the hareeseh is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot hareeseh, allowing it to soak in. Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
- Enjoy your delicious hareeseh!
Hareeseh is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert with a rich history dating back centuries. This delectable sweet treat originated in the Levant region and is particularly popular in countries like Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. The dish is made from a blend of semolina, sugar, and yogurt, creating a unique texture that is both creamy and crumbly. The mixture is then baked to perfection, resulting in a golden-brown crust with a soft, moist interior. Hareeseh is often garnished with a generous drizzle of fragrant syrup and a sprinkle of nuts, adding a delightful contrast of flavors and textures. Today, the best versions of Hareeseh can be found in authentic Middle Eastern restaurants and bakeries, where talented chefs skillfully prepare this beloved dessert using traditional methods. The key to achieving the perfect Hareeseh lies in achieving the ideal balance of sweetness and moisture, as well as ensuring a golden, crispy top. While the basic recipe remains consistent, some variations may include the addition of rose water or orange blossom water for a subtle floral note. Whether enjoyed as a comforting end to a meal or as a sweet indulgence with a cup of tea, Hareeseh continues to captivate dessert enthusiasts with its timeless appeal.
