Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Quiche
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 1 pre-made pie crust
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups of Gruyere cheese, grated
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups of heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place the pre-made pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the bottom of the pie crust. Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese on top of the onions.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 1/2 cups of heavy cream, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Pour the egg mixture over the onions and cheese in the pie crust.
- Bake the quiche in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
- Allow the quiche to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

Renowned chefs like Julia Child and Jacques Pepin have popularized the recipe, incorporating their own unique twists. The key to a perfect Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Quiche lies in the quality of the Gruyere cheese and the slow caramelization of the onions, creating a sweet and savory flavor profile.
