Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 wild boar steaks (6 oz each)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 shallot, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
Instructions
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
- Season the wild boar steaks with salt and pepper on both sides, then brush with olive oil.
- Grill the steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or to your desired level of doneness. Remove from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes.
- While the steaks are resting, prepare the red wine reduction sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the shallot and garlic, and cook until softened, about 2 minutes.
- Pour in the red wine and beef broth, and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced by half and thickened slightly.
- Stir in the fresh thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- To serve, spoon the red wine reduction sauce over the grilled wild boar steaks and enjoy!
The history of Grilled Wild Boar Steak with a red wine reduction sauce dates back to ancient times when wild boar was a staple in many European diets. This dish has evolved over the years, with chefs adding their own unique twists to the classic recipe. In recent years, it has become a popular choice in upscale restaurants and is often associated with regions known for their wild boar hunting traditions, such as Tuscany in Italy and the Ardennes in Belgium. The key to a perfect Grilled Wild Boar Steak with red wine reduction sauce lies in the quality of the meat and the careful preparation of the sauce. The wild boar meat should be marinated to tenderize it and enhance its natural flavors before being grilled to perfection. The red wine reduction sauce, made with a rich, full-bodied red wine, shallots, and herbs, adds a luxurious finish to the dish. One famous alternative method for making this dish is to slow-cook the wild boar steak in the red wine reduction sauce, allowing the flavors to meld together and create a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Today, some of the best versions of this dish can be found in renowned Italian and French restaurants, where talented chefs showcase their expertise in preparing wild game meats. When making this dish at home, it's essential to source high-quality wild boar meat and a robust red wine to achieve the depth of flavor that this dish is known for.
